2017 was a rough year. It was not like when I was starting my little DJ career. I do recall when I was just starting, around 2000, when I was just a plain and simple chat room DJ. All I had in mind was to play music and make the chat room lively and vibrant. While I was in the chat room environment, I was invited to join several DJ competitions. Luckily, I do win several times. Since it was held in a chat room, the audience and judges cannot see my physical condition; I am in wheelchair. That is why, I think, the decision cannot be based on pity.
From little prizes I used and saved my small reward to pay my bills and buy the things I need. Because I know blessings will not come every day. As a consequence, I need to prepare for the dry season.
Then came January 1, 2012, I took part in the biggest DJ competition in the chat room. Biggest in the sense one can buy a new DJ controller with the prize. I have to show my talent against my fellow contestants. Most of them were using sophisticated and state of the art DJ equipment. Fortunately, I won the competition. After winning and using the HERCULES DJ MP3 E2 DJ CONTROLLER; which was sent by my elementary classmate who saw my potential and believed in my talent as a DJ.
As a result I was able to buy myself a NUMARK MIXTRACK NON PRO DJ controller with the prize I received.
For reasons I don’t know I was banned in joining DJ competitions in the chat room. That is why I had to step up a little further. In doing so, I need to upgrade my DJ controller.
From small things and with little steps, I was able to DJ and perform in small and big crowd and events outside the chat room.
Indeed, when you see and make people happy and one gets paid, it is really overwhelming. I am really astonished with these blessings. I could not believe I can make money out of my hobby.
Although a lot of people told me that I will not prosper with what I am doing, there is no money in becoming a DJ and most of all I could not feed my family with my music collection. I know, many were thinking, becoming a DJ was only a fashion statement.
Well, sorry for those who discredit and don’t believe in me, I am determined to prove them wrong.
Although reaching the status of a paid DJ was not easy. Considering I am in wheelchair I had to compete with abled bodied DJs. I had to squeeze myself and carve a niche in the DJ industry. I had my share working as a pro bono DJ. It was sort of a marketing strategy. I had to make a trademark for myself. I also participated in several DJ competitions outside the chat room. Oftentimes I was nominated as the People’s Choice Award. Also, as a DJ, I experienced performing for free at local bars and clubs in our area. All I wanted was to expose and show my talent as a DJ. I’m happy with that.
After a series of pro bono DJ services there came to a point I realized. The club owner and the crowd are enjoying my music. While me I don’t get anything. This is not doing good. It is me who spends time building up playlist and practices 24 / 7. In fact sometimes I am the one who pays my transportation. I have bills to pay. But no I am not complaining. This is part of my long cherished dream. I will do everything to reach my goal.
A lot of people are telling me I inspire them. Inspiring people is not enough. Nonetheless, I need to earn an income from being a DJ. I cannot be a pro bono DJ for the rest of my life. Moreover, because I am in wheelchair, I don’t beg for people to hire me as a DJ. With determination, I went out of my comfort zone and did what I have to do. Naturally, fruits of a tree will not fall down, if I will just lie down. Certainly, I need to climb the tree to get the fruit.
For a few months after performing for free as a DJ. My high school classmate celebrated his 40th birthday, I asked him if I could be the DJ for his birthday. He said yes. Then he asked me how much is my rate? I told him it’s my birthday gift, just give me the chance to show my talent as a DJ. But then he really insisted to pay me. So I gave him my rate. Guess what? I was not expecting my rate would be twice with what I was asking for. I will just let my video on Youtube speak on my behalf, if I am being paid out of pity.
Not only that, the event organizer of my classmate’s birthday celebration invited me again as a DJ. This time on a different event. Again I was paid with an additional tip.
From then on I told myself I could really make income out of my hobby. Since 2012 and after I got banned in joining DJ competitions in the chat room. I started using my Facebook account to promote my events. It was just a plain and simple Facebook post which started it all. I just started posting mixtapes. I didn’t realize I was starting to create a clout of followers.
Many were asking me where do I get my music? I had no idea I would make another livelihood out of my music files. I started out, transferring music files directly from my external hard drive to another laptop. Because that time I was using an old laptop. I wasn’t aware that was dangerous. It could wipe away all of my music collection. My laptop that time could not detect the external hard drive of my clients. It was a gamble for me, whether I would do anything or do nothing. Consequently I had to save my income in order for me to buy a new laptop.
God is really good! I was selling my 750 gig external hard drive filled with music. A few weeks I posted my ad on Facebook. I found a buyer. Therefore, I was able to buy a new laptop.
From then on, that’s the time I started buying and selling storage devices. From 750 gig, I was able to sell numerous music files and storage devices (including 1 terra up to 4 terra music files). Unfortunately, I cannot ship storage devices internationally. But I can upload music files for my clients from abroad. Perhaps I can ship storage devices locally (anywhere in the Philippines).
At this point, I was encouraged to create my Facebook page, January 2016. If I am to compare having a Facebook page and a WordPress site. At first, I was not comfortable using WordPress for my small business. I was more familiar using Facebook. Since I only started using WordPress, June 2017. That time business was not doing good. Sales became a bit sluggish. I tried avoiding WordPress, for a while. There was something pulling me back to use WordPress. Primarily, because WordPress can be my alternative business outlet. While Facebook is being saturated with bogus music file sellers. Good thing I learned having a WordPress site can set me apart from them. Having a WordPress site symbolizes legitimacy of one’s business. Simply, because not everyone who has Facebook can have a WordPress site. Moreover, not everyone who has Facebook page can do or have a WordPress site. In a better analogy, one would need to pass an eye of a needle to have a WordPress site.
Furthermore with my status and popularity being a legit music file seller. I have no plans deceiving my clients. Because I know my clients worked hard for the money they will pay me. They deserve the best product they are paying.
One thing I learned, it would really take guts and patience, having a WordPress site. Success would not come instantly, once you have a WordPress site. It would take months or years before I will get known in the WordPress community. But that’s fine with me. I’m used in waiting. I do believe if my Facebook page became successful. I know my WordPress site will be successful.
Like within the Facebook circle I was easily noticed. Because Facebook is so popular. Business might not be booming like before. Many are using Facebook to sell something. Even though they are not qualified to sell something. Much worst, they don’t know about the product they are selling. That is why I keep reminding my loyal and regular clients to be wise and be careful. Not to be deceived by cheap prices. Otherwise they might be buying substandard products. Modesty aside some of my clients tried buying from my competitors last 2017. They ended up regretting. All I told them, “it is not my lost.” With three of my clients who bought music files from my competitor, a manifold of clients replaced them. Some of whom ordered twice or thrice in 2017.
Perhaps 2017 was a molding year for me. It smoothens the roughness I experience. 2017 taught me to keep pushing forward. Despite the grumpy days. Those times I wanted to give up. However, there was one little voice whispering to me, “if I quit, who would be on the losing end.”
In 2017, as an events / freelance DJ my DJ for hire services seems to have weakened. I got booked thrice in 2017. Two were my regular clients. One was a new client. Unlike in those years when I was promoting myself. I was regularly being booked. Nevertheless, as I was becoming popular within the DJ circle, I became selective in accepting bookings. What’s important now, is I get paid. If I don’t get paid. I wouldn’t go out of my home. Presently, as a DJ, I am satisfied if I do get booked once, twice, thrice. As long as my cash register is ringing. After all, I do earn in selling music files.
As 2018 comes in, I met new clients, I know these clients will try other music file sources. Well for me that’s their choice. I cannot force them to buy from me. Because I am in wheelchair. If they don’t like me because I am in wheelchair. I don’t care. There are lots of fishes in the ocean.
I do remember during my high school days. I used to envy my classmates who could afford to buy the latest and most expensive vinyl record. I told myself; someday I will be distributing the rarest and latest music in the world. With hard work and perseverance, I am able to collect a huge amount of music. At any rate, my ambition to become a DJ didn’t end there. I needed an equipment where I can play my music. Viola! Heaven sent me a DJ controller. Instinct is telling me I should not stop elevating myself. I need to be productive.
That is why I will continue to do the things I am doing.
This 2018 I will update my WordPress site regularly. So EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED!
